What is a domain name? What is a web Server? What is a web Host? What are website files? How does webmail work? What is SEO?
A domain name is the address or URL of your website. Such as: www.mywebsite.com. Where the "mywebsite" would be typically be the name of your site. |
A web server is a computer that is connected to the Internet and has server capabilities (allows for file sharing, permissions, etc. over a network). Everything that can be accessed on the Internet is located in files on a server computer. |
A web host is a company or entity that utilizes one or more web servers along with specialized software programs. This combination of computers and software allows clients to upload and manage the files that makeup their respective website. |
Every website is made up of files. These files contain the format or layout of your site (design), the content, images and more. |
Webmail, like any other material that is passed over the internet utilizes web servers to pass files and information from computer to computer. Email accounts, whether they are provided by your Internet Service Provider (ISP), your web hosting company, or another third party such as Google or Yahoo, reside on these respective web servers. You can then access your emails by either configuring a e-mail client such as Outlook Express or Outlook on your computer or by logging into your online account with the email provider. |
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. Search engine optimization is the process of making your website visible when people search for specific terms or phrases in a search engine such as Google, Yahoo, or MSN. There are two main ways of providing this visibility. One can be done quickly, but can be costly, the other method is relitively low cost, but can take a long time to be successful.
